Senior Electrical Engineer, Substation Design (P.Eng.)
Job Summary
Verdyn is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer, Substation Design to join our Engineering and Design team in Toronto. This role is responsible for the design, development, and execution of medium- and high-voltage substations, switching stations, collector substations, and utility interconnection facilities supporting renewable energy, battery energy storage, EV charging, microgrid, and power quality projects.
This position is ideal for an experienced Professional Engineer licensed in Ontario with several years of hands-on substation design engineering experience. The successful candidate will lead station design activities from concept development through detailed engineering, procurement, construction support, and commissioning. The role requires strong technical capability, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to coordinate effectively with utilities, customers, consultants, contractors, and internal project teams.
Responsibilities
Lead the design and engineering of substations, switching stations, collector stations, and interconnection facilities for renewable energy, energy storage, EV charging, and power reliability projects.
Prepare and review engineering deliverables including:
single-line diagrams
three-line diagrams
AC and DC schematics
general arrangement drawings
plan and elevation drawings
grounding layouts
cable routing and trench layouts
equipment installation details
Perform and review engineering calculations and studies, including equipment sizing, short-circuit analysis, load flow analysis, cable sizing, voltage drop, station service requirements, and grounding and bonding design.
Develop technical specifications and procurement documents for major electrical equipment such as transformers, breakers, disconnect switches, switchgear, instrument transformers, auxiliary systems, and protection and control panels.
Ensure all designs meet applicable codes, standards, utility requirements, and customer specifications, including CSA, IEEE, IEC, and relevant Canadian electrical standards.
Coordinate closely with civil, structural, mechanical, protection and control, SCADA, and communications disciplines throughout the project lifecycle.
Support utility interconnection and technical review processes by preparing design packages, responding to comments, and participating in technical meetings.
Provide technical leadership during construction and commissioning, including design clarification, field issue resolution, review of shop drawings and submittals, and support for energization activities.
Contribute to proposal preparation, scope development, budgeting, and technical risk assessment for new opportunities.
Mentor junior engineers and designers and support the continuous improvement of Verdyn’s engineering practices and standards.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
P.Eng. designation in Ontario, in good standing.
Several years of progressive experience in electrical engineering, including strong experience in substation design engineering.
Demonstrated experience with the design of medium-voltage and high-voltage substations, switchyards, or utility interconnection facilities.
Strong understanding of substation physical layout, equipment arrangements, grounding and bonding, electrical clearances, and utility design requirements.
Experience preparing detailed engineering packages for procurement, construction, and commissioning.
Proficiency with engineering and design tools such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP, SKM PowerTools, or similar software.
Strong knowledge of electrical codes and standards relevant to substation and power system design in Canada.
Experience coordinating with utilities, customers, consultants, contractors, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical writing and presentation skills.
Strong organizational skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting projects in renewable energy, battery energy storage systems (BESS), EV charging infrastructure, microgrids, or power quality applications.
Familiarity with protection relays, metering, SCADA, and station communications systems.
Experience with field construction support, testing, energization, and commissioning of substations or related electrical infrastructure.
Experience reviewing vendor drawings, technical submittals, and construction documentation.
